Revitalising Heritage: The Construction of Nike x Palace Skateboards – Manor Place
The transformation of the historic Manor Place bathhouse into a dynamic community hub exemplifies innovative construction and meticulous preservation. This Grade II-listed Victorian building, long a symbol of architectural heritage, has been reimagined to serve contemporary cultural and recreational needs through a carefully orchestrated renovation and extension process.
Central to the project was the challenge of integrating modern recreational facilities within a protected historic structure. The construction team developed a sophisticated plan to preserve the building’s Victorian character while accommodating cutting-edge design features. Key elements include a pioneering skatepark positioned above an underground football cage, requiring precise structural reinforcement and innovative foundation solutions to support the new loads without compromising the existing fabric.
Additionally, the project involved creating dedicated spaces for emerging artists and creatives, seamlessly blending adaptive reuse with functional design. This required careful spatial planning to maximise the building’s capacity while maintaining its historic integrity.
From initial structural assessments through to the installation of specialised sports and art facilities, the construction process prioritised both preservation and innovation. The result is a resilient, multi-purpose venue that offers free access to sport, art, and community collaboration, an inspiring example of how historic landmarks can be repurposed to foster contemporary culture.
